Question by Sarah Ann: How difficult is it to get an apartment after filing bankruptcy?
I filed bankruptcy about 1 year ago. Since that time I have paid all my bills on time and I have perfect rental history for my current apartment. I have also been at my same job for 5 1/2 years now so my employment history is also good.
I am needing to move in the next few months and I am wondering how difficult it will be to get approved for another apartment. Are they really that concerned with the bankruptcy if I have good rental and job history?
Thanks for your input!

It will depend on if the place runs credit checks or not but regardless, the key is complete honesty. I am a landlord and I would take all into consideration. The rental history and year of good payment will go a long way but be prepared. You will probably have to pay higher rent or a larger deposit at the least. For me, I would require an extra month’s deposit as well as a six month lease with penalties for late rent payments. If you agree, you will probably be able to find another one but just be really honest about your situation. Be sure your current landlord knows you are looking and will have no problem giving you a good reference. Also, be ready to show proof of your rental payments for the past year.
